DESIGNING AND DEVELOPING DIGITAL MATH GAMES FOR THIRD-GRADERS

Summary: 
Digital game-based learning has emerged as a vibrant field of global research, particularly since the early 2000s. However, in Vietnam, research in this area remains sparse due to being in the digital transformation in education. This study aims to propose a set of principles and a design and development process for digital games in primary mathematics education. It also illustrates a game designed and built from this process, adhering to the established principles. Based on a comprehensive review of research and the characteristics of primary mathematics learning, the article presents five fundamental principles and a four-step process for designing and developing digital games. These steps highlight the significant role of educators, particularly teachers, in analyzing learners and educational objectives, coupled with designing games tailored to the pupils’ demographic. The research outcomes provide teachers with creative teaching approaches, fostering an engaging, meaningful, and motivating learning environment. It also offers insights for stakeholders involved in the production of educational digital games, providing a clear perspective on creating quality games that align with the primary education curriculum.
