DEVELOPING LEARNER'S VERBAL ABILITY IN THE LIGHT OF MODERN LINGUISTIC THEORY

Summary: 
Presently, our education is being encouraged to shift from knowledge-based approach to competencebased one. The paper aims to summarize and analyze the pioneering and influential communicative models in language teaching in terms of the learner’s verbal competence: Communicative competence model by Canale and Swain, Communicative competence model by Murcia, Dornyei and Thurrell, Language ability model by Bachman and Palmer, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, hence contributing to the renovation of teaching-learning, of curriculum development and of the assessment of the language ability of learners in the school today.
