Summary:
The transition period from preschool to primary school of children with autism spectrum disorders is critical, but research on this issue is currently limited in Vietnam. Using focus group discussions with nine professionals and administrators, in-depth interviews with three parents and three teachers in charge of pre-primary classes in Hanoi, this study explores the views of teachers and parents about the transition for children with autism spectrum disorder from preschool to primary school. The research results show that there are four identified topics, which are: 1) The prevalence of children with autism spectrum disorder; 2) Available services and its quality; 3) Difficulties in the transition period; 4) Expectations of teachers and parents when transitioning children from preschool to primary school. On such basis, some recommendations are proposed to make the transition period of children with autism spectrum disorder more effective.
