Summary:
Research data is one of the most valuable outcomes of most research. The public release of research datasets in a free and openaccess format has consequently become a fundamental practice within the open science movement. In this context, publishing data papers is an optimal choice, not only for disseminating data but also for providing the necessary descriptions to enable colleagues and the research community to easily find, access, and reuse it. Despite its significance, data publishing remains uncommon and relatively unfamiliar to Vietnamese scientists. This study examines data papers in the field of social sciences authored by Vietnamese researchers and published in journals indexed in the SCOPUS database. The findings reveal that only 57 data papers were recorded, with the annual number surpassing 10 papers from 2020 onward, a trend that coincides with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, the majority of these publications were in the field of education, with most papers appearing in the journal Data in Brief. Furthermore, this study identifies the funding sources for these data papers and discusses the importance of this practice for the Vietnamese academic community.
