Summary:
This study was carried out to investigate teacher students’ perceptions of research competence and its development in the university environment. The study was conducted on 142 English teacher students at Vinh University. The data were collected from different instruments, including questionnaire, interviews and class observations. The results showed that English teacher students were aware of the crucial role of research competency for their career but they could not identify different sub-components of this competency, leading to their inaccurate selfassessment of their own research ability. Moreover, it was found that the students were the main factor that affects negatively on teacher students’ development of this research competency. From the findings, the paper puts forward some pedagogical suggestions in order to improve the research competence for university students, especially teacher students.
