This study aims to explore the measurement tools of self-directed learning assessment by qualitative research method with analyzing various related documents. The results show that, some remarkable measurement tools include 1) The self-directed learning readiness scales (SDLRS); 2) Personal responsibility scale in self-directed learning; 3) Self-directed learning cognitive scale; 4) Scale of self-directed learning skills; 5) Selfassessment scale of self-directed learning. Among these scales, the most prominent instrument is the SDLRS by Guglielmino (1977) and a modified version by Fisher et al. (2001), which predict the extent to which learners self-assess their skills and attitudes in self-directed learning. Those scales are considered an appropriate tool for undergraduates and those who have completed high school. Besides, the scales can also measure the relationship between self-directed learning and other variables. Moreover, they are also applied to assess students’ perception of readiness for self-directed learning. The research also shows that, in Vietnam, there is no research related to the measurement and assessment of self-directed learning. Therefore, some suggestions for application in Vietnam are also mentioned in this article. The research results are expected to contribute to the theoretical basis of selfdirected learning measurement and assessment in Vietnam.
