Summary:

In the 2018 Vietnamese Literature curriculum, the narrator in narrative texts is a key component of reading comprehension instruction and is consistently addressed from Grade 6 through Grade 12. According to narratology theory, the narrator is a fictional construct within the artistic world of a literary work, playing a pivotal role in the narrative technique of storytelling. The fundamental elements of the narrator include narrative point of view, focalization, and narrative voice. Although theoretical perspectives on the narrator remain diverse and at times contested, the 2018 curriculum and textbooks have selected the most appropriate concepts for learners to support effective instruction. Using both theoretical and practical approaches, this article offers a number of discussions and pedagogical suggestions for teaching the concept of the narrator in narrative texts, structured around the three fundamental elements: the person, the narrator’s words and the narrator’s point of view.
