Summary:
The study provides empirical evidence on the linkage between economic development and Vietnam’s higher education efficiency during the 2013-2016 period. The Färe-Primont index decomposes Vietnam’s higher education system’s total factor productivity (TFP) into several components, combined with the Statistical Yearbook data, the results show that the economic indicators of Vietnam (i.e., gross domestic product, private enterprise development, industrial development index, and foreign direct investment [FDI] flow) do not improve in tandem with higher education performance. This result implies a lack of synchronization in the two pillars: the economy and higher education in Vietnam. Therefore, in the coming years, effectively building and developing mechanisms to connect universities with the (labor) market, and at the same time constructing a synchronous educational information sharing project is the main task for policy-making
