Summary: 
The establishment of universities has led to the early and strong development of scientific products serving the essential needs of society in many contexts. The expansion in university scale in addition to the trend of the massification and universalization of higher education has caused shortages and financial difficulties in the operation mechanism of university. The university governance mechanism is recently an issue attracting the attention of many researchers and educational administrators. The article aims to provide a general assessment of the university governance mechanism in Vietnam, thereby providing a number of solutions to improve governance efficiency at Vietnamese higher education institutions, while improving the quality of higher education at present and in the future.
