Summary:
Conic sections have recently resumed their position as an important subject in high school Mathematics curriculum after decades of neglect. This is the aim of this article to provide an overview of this topic and to help both pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers to better prepare for the implementation of the general education curriculum in Mathematics. The author presents the history of conic sections and some aspects of their didactic transposition followed by certain comments with respect to notable discontinuities, and then suggests an educational scenario based on the competency based approach for the learning of conic sections.
