Summary:
In the context of the technology development and educational requirements in recent times, the methods of teaching, learning, and assessment require changes to meet the needs of society and the objectives of higher education. By literature review, this study aims to find out the purpose of assessment as learning (ASL) in relation to self-directed learning (SDL) at higher education institutions. The research results show that both ASL and SDL focus on learner-centered target and promote learners’ proactive learning in accessing information, cultivating knowledge, skills, creativity and lifelong learning. In addition, they also encourage students to supervise their learning and self-regulate, as well as develop their thinking, while teachers and classmates can use ASL to give feedbacks and supports to their students in SDL. Basing on the research results, some implications have been suggested to promote ASL and SDL in the context of Vietnam higher education. Thereby, it is expected to contribute to providing the initially scientific basis for the future researches and the development of teaching methods and assessment in accordance with the reality and students’ needs.
