STUDYING THE MERGING OF HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS IN FRANCE AND CHINA - LESSONS FOR VIETNAM

Summary: 
In fact, the number of universities in Vietnam has exceeded the figure set out in the Decision 37/2013/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on the Planning of Universities and Colleges Network in the 2006-2020 period; therefore, the merging, amalgamation and dissolution of higher education institutions is indispensable and necessary to build large, internationalcompetitive universities. This article examines the experience of mergers and alliances in higher education in France and China. For each country, the domestic higher education context, the waves of mergers, as well as its positive and negative effects will be analyzed. The final part of the article will present lessons learned for the planning of higher education network in Vietnam.
