Summary:
Technology is a factor that has a strong impact on the shaping the educational landscape today. The first part of the paper introduces forecasts of six technologies for higher education arranged along three time horizons over which their popularity and their positive impact reach the cusp across institution types. The second part of the paper addresses challenges to technology application, including external challenges such as access restrictions as well as a lack of training and support, and internal ones to teachers, such as their attitudes and beliefs, their resistance toward technology, and limitations on technological knowledge and skills. Corresponding to these challenges, solutions are also proposed to help educators, higher education leaders, and technologists proactively remove barriers when attempting to apply technology in teaching practice.
