APPLYING THE "SQ3R" INTO TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ COMPETENCY

The 2018 General Education Curriculum was implemented to develop students' competencies and qualities. Accordingly, it requires teachers to innovate the teaching methods and techniques to enhance comprehensively students' skills and qualities. In particular, developing students' reading skill is crucial and urgent nowadays to improve their literary appreciation competency. For high school students, text reading tactics or skills are not diverse, and difficult to access and deep understanding of the text. SQ3R is a well-known reading tactic that gives students several specific and useful manipulations for each reading phase (before, during, and after reading). The study explores the SQ3R and its application in teaching reading comprehension to develop the variety of skills required by the 2018 Curriculum. The study results show that during the reading comprehension periods, students use the SQ3R technique to improve their reading and reading comprehension skills. In addition, they also see that reading is a crucial skill in experiencing texts.
