THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ENGLISH PROFICIENCY AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF ADVANCED PROGRAM STUDENTS

Summary:
Research on the relationship between TOEFL scores and academic performance has been conducted with 340 students from the advanced programs of two majors, Civil Engineering and Water Resources Engineering, at Thuyloi University. The study shows that a TOEFL score of 500 is appropriate for English language proficiency. The highest TOEFL scores tend to correlate with admission scores for students (excluding priority points). However, TOEFL scores do not accurately reflect students’ academic abilities in their specialized fields. To attract students and promote effective English learning, it is necessary to consider the characteristics of foreign language education such as the amount of instructional time, program content, physical health, extracurricular activities, clubs, and Olympiad competitions, and to review English language conditions for students in each academic year
