Summary: 
The article examines the international experience of standard development in the English curriculum for middle and high schools in some countries such as Australia and the United States (specifically through the case of California). Drawing from the international experience of those countries, the article presents several comments, suggestions, and experiences for Vietnam in developing standards for the Vietnamese and Literature subjects. In the current context of teaching and learning this subject under the 2018 General Education curriculum, the development of subject standards plays an important role in supporting teaching and assessment in schools.
