EMI PROGRAMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN VIETNAM AND IN THE WORLD: APPLICATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary: 
The use of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) has attracted much attention from many researchers and educators worldwide. Basing on the analysis of related studies, this paper aims at synthesizing EMI application in different countries in the world, including Vietnam, and then recommending some solutions in order to improve the effectiveness of EMI teaching and learning at higher institutions in Vietnam. More specifically, the paper focuses on professional development of EMI teachers by suggesting that EMI training program needs to develop teachers’ different competencies, including pedagogical competence, target language competence and multi-cultural competence.
