A MODEL OF SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING AT HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

Summary: 
With the aim of investigating a model of self-directed learning for undergraduates at higher education institutions, this study was conducted by desk study to review self-directed learning theoretical models including PRO-individual responsibility, a staged self-directed learning approach, a factor-oriented approach, and some other approaches. The research results show that the self-directed learning is a process where students presented their proactive purposeful learning, serving their progress and development, which are specifically shown in individual attributes, learning process, and the relationship with the social context. However, in higher education institutions, learning process does not take place in isolation but with relationships with other factors such as training programs, facilities, faculty, as well as other students. Therefore, the self-directed learning model structure can be arranged in a continuous process, from teacher’s instructions to student self-directed learning. According to this structure, students are the subject of learning activities. Students actively conduct learning process steps while the teacher’s role is to advise, guide, and give feedbacks to students. In addition, the study also gives some relevant recommendations to encourage the selfdirected learning in learning, thereby contributing to improve the quality of teaching and learning in higher education institutions.
