Summary:
Mathematical modeling competence is regarded as an essential component of pre-service teachers’ professional development, as it equips them to design and implement Mathematics teaching that fosters students’ mathematical competence in secondary schools. This article reviews 79 research publications retrieved from the SCOPUS database related to the mathematical modeling competence of pre service teachers. The review analyzes key aspects of this competence, including its conceptualization, significance, manifestations, and associated challenges; and synthesizes international experiences in teacher education. Based on these findings, the study proposes several recommendations for developing mathematical modeling competence among pre-service teachers in Vietnam, in alignment with the objectives of the 2018 General Education Curriculum.
