Summary:
Writing is one of the most important skills in second language acquisition. Academic writing, in particular, has been a challenge to both instructors and learners. This is a compulsory skill for freshmen at the University of Economics and Business - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, who are required to write an essay of at least 250 words within 40 minutes to express their arguments and opinions about a certain topic. This research was implemented with a view to identifying the obstacles faced by these students in writing academic essays. Accordingly, the author would like to propose some recommendations on the teaching and mastering of the academic writing tasks.
