Summary:
Poetry with symbolic and surreal elements is an important part of modern poetry worldwide and in Vietnam. In this language, images, and artistic structures not only reflect reality but also create another world - the world of symbols, subconscious, and irrational associations. Poetry with symbolic and surreal elements shows a tendency to innovate poetics, seeking beauty in the depths of the unconscious and the symbolic world. However, because of the characteristic of language rich in associations, non-linear structure, and multi-layered meaning, teaching and understanding this type of poetic text in high schools, especially in the General education curriculum for the Literature subject of grade 12, encounters many difficulties. On that basis, the article focuses on developing a system of exercises on reading comprehension of poetry with symbolic and surreal factors for 12th-grade students, with the desire to support teachers in the process of teaching reading comprehension of 12th-grade poetry texts, contributing to improving the effectiveness of teaching Literature in high schools in the current teaching context.
