Summary:
Mathematical thinking and reasoning constitute one of the five core components of mathematical competence in Vietnam’s 2018 General education curriculum for Mathematics. Geometry provides a particularly productive context for developing high school students’ reasoning, argumentation, and proof competencies. This study systematically reviews Vietnamese and international research published from 2008 to 2026 to synthesize the theoretical foundations of geometry teaching that aim to foster mathematical thinking and reasoning among high school students. Relevant studies were identified through SCOPUS, Web of Science, SpringerLink, ERIC, and Vietnamese academic journal databases. The findings demonstrate four complementary theoretical pillars: Competence-based frameworks associated with Weinert and Niss; theories of reasoning, argumentation, and proof developed by Lithner, Toulmin, and Stylianides; models of geometric cognition proposed by van Hiele, Duval, and Fischbein; and Vygotsky’s social constructivist perspective. Drawing on these foundations, the study proposes an integrated analytical framework comprising three interrelated dimensions: thinking operations, argumentation structures, and processes of geometric cognition. This framework provides a theoretical basis for designing and evaluating geometry instruction that develops high school students’ mathematical thinking and reasoning competence, aligned with the reform objectives of Vietnam’s 2018 General education curriculum.
