Summary:
Third-grade students are requyred to write expressive paragraphs to express their feelings and emotions about subjects such as family members, friends, animals, natural landscapes, characters in stories or cartoons, poetry, etc. This is a new teaching content in the 2018 Vietnamese language curriculum. This content creates a gap in specific teaching methods, leaving teachers confused when teaching students to write. Students also have limitations in writing, such as limited vocabulary, lack of experience, and inability to use expressive language. This article studies the current situation (survey and analysis of the causes of limitations) regarding the expressive paragraph writing ability of third-grade students in Cao Lanh ward, Dong Thap province. Therefore, the article proposes several teaching methods (nurturing students’ expressive paragraph writing skills through experiential activities…; guiding students in finding and formulating ideas…; guiding students to connect knowledge from reading comprehension, vocabulary and sentence practice, speaking and listening to develop expressive paragraph writing skills…) to help teachers overcome gaps in teaching methods and form and develop students’ expressive paragraph writing skills according to the requyred learning outcomes of the Vietnamese Language Curriculum.
