Summary:
Note-taking is no longer merely a passive act of copying information but has become an essential academic skill that supports learners in processing, organizing, and retaining knowledge. This study aims to investigate the relationship between effective note-taking techniques and listening comprehension among EFL English majors, an area that has received limited empirical attention in the context of language education in Vietnam. Based on a survey of 107 EFL English-major undergraduates, the study employed exploratory factor analysis and multiple linear regression to identify the key influencing factors. The results revealed five main components: Personal skills, content organization, visual aids and symbols, language and abbreviations, and note-taking speed and quantity. Among these, content organization was found to have the strongest impact on students’ listening comprehension. The findings suggest that effective note-taking plays a critical role in improving academic listening and should be incorporated into EFL listening instruction. Findings further indicate that note-taking instruction emphasizing content organization should be systematically integrated into academic listening curricula to maximize learners’ comprehension performance. This research provides practical insights for educators and institutions to design appropriate instructional strategies and develop supporting activities to enhance EFL learners’ listening performance through structured and personalized note-taking techniques.
